Happy New Year to you all, hope you have celebrated well and the hangover has passed! So, another year of sailing fun ahead, and once the ice melts we are ready to go. Having had plenty of time in the last few months to discuss the plan of action with many of you, the programme for 2009 is starting to take shape, which brings me onto several immensely important announcements, as is fit and proper to do every January! As a wise man once said, “A January without a plan of immense importance is like a sailor without a parrot”. OK, I just made that up. So here we are, in no particular order:

1) Spring party - 3rd of April, Pacific Oriental Bar, London. 6pm onwards. As always, an opportunity to meet fellow sailors and get drunk.

2) Kabestan Spring Regatta for 2009 will take place between the 2nd and 9th of May, in the fantastic setting of Bodrum Peninsula, on the Carian coast of Turkey. We have secured a racing fleet of 10 Beneteau-43 yachts for our pleasure, which are serious and comfortable machines ready for action! The format of the regatta will be similar to last year’s Croatia, i.e. lots of fun and plenty of racing. All of the information is here: In Russian and In English.

3) International London Boat Show. We shall be going to the boat show on the 17th of January. I think we will be arriving at about 11am, so if you would like to meet up, call me on 07980213020. As a super cool sailing club, we get a discount (for any day), what you need to do is this: Go to the website: http://www.londonboatshow.com/ (or call them on +44 (0)844 209 0333) and when you are buying tickets, online or over the telephone, give our promotion code: *****. You can buy tickets for 8.50, instead of 12.50. There is a group of people going on the 17th of January, but of course you can go any time during the show, including the preview day, it starts on the 9th and finishes on the 18th of January.

4) Kabestan Zhara!!! We have truly Napoleonic plans this summer and autumn. The plan is to hit the Mediterranean for a series of trips: Balearic (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza), France (Cote d’Azur), Italy (Amalfi, Corsica, etc.) This is still in the early planning stages, details to come soon!

5) The Autumn Kabestan Cup regatta is planned for September, so do start practicing your racing skills! This will be similar to last year, with ISAF officials.

6) More social events are on the list too, of course, dates to come. As the same wise man also said, “You can never have too many drinking opportunities.”

In other news, as a mention of Team Russia has become obligatory in the last few newsletters, this one is no different, although perhaps will be the last one, as Kasatka has run out of money, due to the world financial crisis and Chuck Norris. And so I leave you for another month, trusting that you will do nothing other than dream of the first sail of the coming year. Whoever is first to sail this year wins a special secret Kabestan prize!
